A Blackburn ward will soon celebrate 30 years of service, community spirit and political history.
Livesey with Pleasington was first established in May 1997 during the same general election that brought Tony Blair's New Labour to power.
On that day, residents quietly made history of their own, electing three Conservative councillors in the newly formed ward: Edna Arnold, A. Cottam, and J. Williams.
Edna Arnold led the poll with 2,226 votes.
The Arnold family’s connection to the area and its civic life stretches back even further, with a legacy of public service that began decades before the ward’s creation.
Edna Arnold was first elected in 1973 as a Conservative councillor for West Rural, a predecessor to the current ward.
One resident said: "Her service extended far beyond politics, encompassing work in education, social services, and youth welfare.
"One of her most lasting contributions was helping to establish Nightsafe in 1990, a charity supporting homeless and vulnerable young people in Blackburn.
"She served as its first chairperson and was later named Life President."
Her commitment was recognised in 1994-95 when she served as Mayor of Blackburn, with her husband Keith as mayoral consort.
Julian Arnold now serves as chair of Blackburn Conservative Association and is a member of Livesey Parish Council, carrying forward the family’s legacy of service.
The resident added: "The creation of the ward in 1997 marked a new chapter in the area’s governance, but the spirit of service and community involvement has much deeper roots.
"Over the years, the ward has been defined by the contributions of families, businesses, and organisations working together to improve the lives of residents.
"While political representation has played a role, the true identity of Livesey with Pleasington has been built through shared pride and collective effort.
"The 30th anniversary, which falls on May 1, 2027, offers a moment to reflect on the past and look toward the future.
"It is an opportunity to honour those who have served, celebrate the progress made, and recommit to the values of community and public service."
